French Bulldogs are known for their "bat like" ears, short snouts, and compact, muscular bodies. They're also famous for their affectionate and playful nature, making them popular companion dogs.
Yes, they bare typically great with children and other pets due to their friendly and easy going temperament. They love being part of the family and enjoy playtime.
No, they don't require intense exercise but benefit from daily walks and some playtime. Their short snout makes them prone to overheating, so they should avoid strenuous activity in hot weather. Summer isn't these doggies best season, but they will love to sunbathe in a sunspot in your home!
Generally, French Bulldogs are not excessive barkers. They may bark to alert you, but they tend to be quiet compared to other small breeds.
French Bulldogs are very smart. Consistent positive reinforcement works best for training. They respond well to treats and of course BELLY RUBS! I will be potty training each litter if not fully by the time they go home, at the least to recognize pee pads as a safe space to relieve themselves.
They do shed, but not heavily. We notice shedding the most during the changing of the seasons. Their short coat makes grooming relatively low maintenance so we do a weekly brush and bath and noticed a huge difference in our Frenchies shedding and softness. Safe to say you'll save money on a grooming bill!
Yes, they adapt well to apartment living because of their small size and moderate exercise needs. They are indoor dogs and are generally quiet, which makes them a good fit for apartments, assisted living, etc
French Bulldogs can be prone to allergies, so they may benefit from high-quality food tailored for dogs with sensitivities. Luna, our mama dog, is allergic to chicken so we feed her and all her pups Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach. However, consulting with a vet can help find the best diet for them.
French Bulldogs usually have a lifespan go 10-12 years, although a healthy lifestyle can extend that.
If your French Bulldog finds itself at the veterinarians office it will most likely be due to these common conditions: ear infection, allergies (food/ environmental) & sensitive skin. Some more severe but less common conditions could include IVDD and BOAS. With that being said we strongly recommend that you purchase a pet health insurance policy to cover any extra health expenses. We spend $70 a month for pet health insurance through the AKC for our dogs.
French Bulldogs continues to top the ranking at #1 for two years in a row for most desirable dog according to the AKC website. The cost takes into consideration all the labor required by breeders to produce healthy thriving dogs. The breeding of French Bulldogs requires a great deal of human intervention such as stud fee's, c-sections, and the whelping process. A professional breeder will often want to carefully select mating pairs to maintain and improve specific traits. Artificial insemination and the cesarian section procedure are also required due to physical and anatomical challenges. Because of the flatter structure of the face, breeders have to assist in every feeding to ensure puppies do not aspirate on mamas milk during feedings.
